We have set out to create a Whole New Genre of Music.

This is CounterParts. The artists that bring my music to life are:
Dave Mohn on drums, Jack Hegyi on bass, and Dave Renz on saxophones.
This band has chosen to explore the “not so obvious” use of our instruments, rhythms, and arranging that make my compositions unique.

Renz and Runge were the original Counterparts, a duo working together for more than 25 years, writing and recording our respective compositions. Likewise, Mohn and Hegyi have worked together just as long, as a truly creative and flexible rhythm section. I needed their inspiration, enthusiasm, and arranging skills to complete the live show! I also needed them to be willing to try, try again as we search for fresh ways to apply our respective instruments. We gathered 50 years of experience before we played a single note.

We are inspired by great bands like Weather Report, The Jazz Messengers, Yellowjackets; and composers like Dave Grusin, Chick Corea, Stevie Wonder. We delight in rock artists like Toto and Steely Dan. Our approach to Jazz composition is inspired by gospel music, and great R&B artists like Quincy Jones and Earth Wind & Fire.

Collectively, we have recorded and performed almost every genre of music in our entertainment careers. I personally allow myself to be influenced by everything I have heard and seen. I can honestly say CounterParts brings all of our life experiences to the stage and we tell our truths through music!

Our concerts over the past two years have been attended by 40 to 130 people. Our first concert was recorded with video and multi-track audio. The recording yielded an exciting concert video! We are building a schedule for the summer and fall of 2026. We are expanding our search for venues to play to include club dates, as well as ticketed affairs and concert stages. We are working towards opening shows for well-known jazz artists, and headlining our own shows.

We have one rule in this band, don’t play anything obvious,
unless it’s OK with Walt!
Let’s Play.
